Print resource item barcode labels

Destiny® lets you print barcode labels individually, for items you are adding, for those in a Resource List or a barcode file, for those added after a particular date, or those of a Department or Home Location.

For barcode labels by Resource List, Department, Home Location, or date added, print them from Resource Reports in Reports.

How do I print one or more barcode labels for items I am adding?

Do I need to test them?

What does the label contain?

What label stock can I use?

How are the labels on the sheet numbered?

The printing is not centered on the label.
How do I correct this?

To print one or more barcode labels for items

  1. From Resource Status in Circulation, click Print Labels after retrieving an item.
From Add Item or Edit Item in the Catalog, select the Print Labels check box, and then click Save.
The Print Item Labels page opens.
  2. If you want duplicate labels, enter the number you want for each item.
  3. Select any of the optional fields to include the information on the label.
Barcode labels always include the scannable barcode and the eye-readable number.
  4. Choose the label stock and starting label.
  5. Click Run Report.
  6. When the Report Manager opens, click View to open the label report.
  7. After positioning the label stock in your printer, use Adobe Reader's toolbar button or menu command to print the labels.
To test them

The first time you print barcode labels, print a few samples on plain paper, and do the following:

  • Make sure that the barcode is centered on the label. (Scanners require some white space at either end of the vertical barcode lines.)
If not, adjust the offsets and try again. When you print, Destiny saves the offset settings you used so that you do not have to set them again.
  • Make sure that your scanner, PHD, or wireless handheld device can read the barcodes. The quality of the printout varies from printer to printer; some older printers cannot produce scanner-readable barcodes.
Label contents

Barcode labels contain the items scannable barcode, the eye-readable number, and any of the three optional fields:

  • Site or District name
  • Resource Name (up to 50 characters)
  • Home Location (up to 50 characters)
Label stock

You can use any of three stocks. Stock from other vendors may work as well. Make sure to print a test page on plain paper and adjust the offsets as needed.

Label numbering

Destiny counts labels from left to right, then top to bottom.
To start printing on a label other than the first one on the sheet, set Start on label to the label number where printing should begin.
For example, to start printing on the second label of the third row of a 3 × 10 sheet, enter 8.

7 8 9
10 11 12

To center the label

Use the Printer offsets to fine-tune the alignment of the printing on the labels. The Horizontal and Vertical offsets let you adjust the left and top margins, respectively. Each increment is equal to 1/10th of a millimeter. Keep in mind that the offsets needed for each label stock vary from printer to printer.

The first time you select a label stock, you may want to print a few tests on plain paper to ensure that the printing is aligned correctly.

When you print, Destiny saves the offset settings you used so that you do not have to set them again.

For the Horizontal setting, locate your stock in the following table and enter a number within the allowable range:

Item # Minimum
setting
Maximum
setting
Avery 5160 -10 10
Sagebrush 0370-00000001 -10 10
University 9-62450-16 -23 22

For the Vertical setting:

Item # Minimum
setting
Maximum
setting
Avery 5160 -36 36
Sagebrush 0370-00000001 -49 49
University 9-62450-16 -36 36

Any offsets you define for labels are in addition to the unprintable area defined in your printer's properties.
